John Travolta and Kelly Preston are speaking out for the first time since the tragic death of their 16-year-old son, Jett Travolta, last Friday.

The family posted a message on KellyPreston.com on Sunday thanking fans for their support during this very difficult time.

“Jett was the most wonderful son that two parents could ever ask for and lit up the lives of everyone he encountered,” the Travoltas said. “We are heartbroken that our time with him was so brief. We will cherish the time that we had with him for the rest of our lives.”

“We would like to extend our deepest and most heartfelt thanks to everyone who has sent their love and condolences.”

Jett, who had a history of seizures, was found unconscious in a bathroom at his family’s home at the Old Bahama Bay resort on Grand Bahama Island Friday morning.

This poor young man he had a very tough life.

Jett suffered from “frequent and extremely serious” seizures, but stopped taking the prescribed medication because of damaging side effects, family lawyers Michael McDermott and Michael Ossi said today. In fact, he was known to sieze about four times a week.

Jett had taken Depakote, an anti seizure medication, for several years, but was taken off the medication after it lost effectiveness and “it began to cause serious physical damage” to his liver.

The seizures returned.
