Helen Brown reviews Me and Armini by Emiliana Torrini

  • Emiliana Torrini
    Me and Armini
    Rough Trade, £11.99

The indie scene is full of female singers with hushed, girlish voices breathing over quirky lo-fi beats. But half-Icelandic, half-Italian Emiliana Torrini shines above the current crop as a songwriter of luminous talent.

Since her trip-hoppy debut in 1999, she's been heard singing the spectral Gollum's Song over the credits to The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and she also co-wrote Kylie's hit Slow.

Her seventh album sees her embracing a quietly startling range of mainly acoustic moods: from exuberant, rackety rock and roll through reflectively picked ballads to the stalkerish reggae bounce of the title track. Torrini spins songs like spider webs, featherlight snares taut with dark and delicate tension.

On a track called Gun, she promises "a kiss that I swear will blow your mind".
