Twilight Squares off against Indiana Jones

Times were simpler in the days before the internet. You go to a movie, see the trailer reels and get a glimpse a few months ahead, then watch what you’re there to see. You might see some tv spots, advertising it again a few weeks before it comes out, and then a poster campaign. You certainly would not see the trailer huge numbers of times, simply because you’d have to pay for every single one. So a trailer achieving 4.1 MILLION views in a single week wasn’t exactly plausible.

Nowadays, it is, though it does require a certain amount of enthusiasm and interest in the movie to exist prior to the trailer’s release. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Indiana Jones’ fourth time around the movie circuit, definitely has crazy mobs of enthusiastic fans floating around, and that enthusiasm gained it the world record of most trailer views in a single week, with 4.1 million views on the Yahoo site, and another 2.6 million on the film’s official website, IndianaJones.com.

However, these numbers may pale in comparison to what Twilight’s about to accomplish. Slashfilm, despite not always getting on so well with the Twilight fanbase (the Twilighters), has pointed out that while Indiana Jones took a whole week to earn those numbers, the teen vampire love story has already clocked up over 2 million views in only three days. Twilight’s fanbase has more of an internet-savvy feel, so while Indiana Jones has the love of fans from 8 to 80, Twilight’s has the competitive edge.

With the movie’s own website opening the teaser today, it’s a safe bet that fans will watch and rewatch the minute long teaser over the weekend, just in case some new content was snuck in, especially when they hear that it’s so close to taking down such an established icon. So, is it possible that Twilight, an adaptation of a young adult novel about a teenaged girl and the vampire she falls head over heels for, is about to take a record from Indiana Jones himself? Personally I think it’s not only possible, but quite likely, but I’m waiting until Monday to find out.
