For those who’ve had their noses buried in things that aren’t movie news articles for the last few months, J.J. Abrams has a monster movie in the works to rival the classic Godzilla (the original, not the one featuring Matthew Broderick). Filmed on hand-held cameras to give the real shakey-cam effect that apparently means we’re seeing things from the point of view of the people in the story, it features things like Lady Liberty’s head being thrown down the street, and avoids showing anything of the monster the movie’s about. Or at least, the last trailer released did anyway. However, one thing it did not feature was a title. Many have been rumored, but all rumors have been shot down, til now.

This just in: J. J. Abrams’ monster movie will be called Cloverfield. Not probably, not maybe (and not very scarily), but definitely. According to movieweb, lucky people who attended advance screenings of Beowulf (the lucky devils) have reported back that a trailer shown prior to the movie showed the official title on the big screen, thus ending all uncertainty.

To be honest, after months of back and forth over this, of calling it the mouthful that is “Untitled New JJ Abrams Project”, or worse, “1/18/08″ (I mean, come on, who actually wants to refer to a movie by the RELEASE DATE of all things?), I don’t know how much I can care about the final decision to call it what people had started calling it a few months back, but hey, who am I to argue? Either way, Cloverfield is the title that’s here to stay, and will be hitting screens on the January 18, 2008.
