Orphan ( Ţađ Má Ekkert í US )

Members of the United States Senate and House of Representatives have issued a letter to Warner Brothers Chairman and CEO Barry M. Meyer expressing their concerns about the upcoming horror thriller Orphan and its negative implications about the millions of orphans and foster children worldwide waiting to be adopted.

The film about a seemingly angelic girl who begins wrecking havoc in the lives of her adopted parents, John and Kate (How’s That For Irony?), has prompted a discussion about the impact of popular culture on international adoption.

Will a movie about a creepy little kid discourage families from opening their homes to parentless children?
At the heart of the controversy seems to be inflammatory remarks made in the film’s trailer, like this one:

“It must be hard to love an adopted child as much as your own…”

“While we understand the movie may be intended as a far-fetched thriller, its trailer contains images and messages about adopted youth that are inaccurate,” the politicans wrote in a letter obtained by The DC Examiner.

“…While these children often come from troubled families, they have the ability to form healthy relationships, achieve in school and succeed in life when given the opportunity. Having met with hundreds of these young people as part of our advocacy for change, we can personally attest to how incredibly strong, loving, and promising they each are.”

The folks on The Hill aren’t the only ones bothered by the controversial film, opening this month. Dr. Jane Aronson, a pediatrician and CEO of the Worldwide Orphans Foundation, wants moviegoers to keep their ten bucks in their pockets and refrain from seeing Orphan at all after deeming the picture harmful to international adoption.

According to NJ.com, Aronson is “encouraging moviegoers to boycott the film to send a strong message to studio executives that they cannot make money off of orphans and vulnerable children.”

The doctor believes Orphan “continues to perpetuate gross misinformation about adoption” as “the movie trailer has already caused great distress on adopted children who have seen the trailer in their neighborhood theaters and the comfort of their homes.”

Orphan opens in theaters July 24.
